ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A little rain wasn't going to stop the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council from having a fun-filled Saturday (and early Sunday) at UCF last weekend. Girls from various troops across Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties headed over to East Orlando for an afternoon and evening of exciting UCF sporting events.
As a part of UCF's UKNIGHT in Pink weekend, over 100 girls packed The Venue to watch the UCF volleyball team take on UAB in an exciting five-set match. Throughout the contest, the energy in the building was buzzing as the Girl Scouts led chants of U-C-F to aid the team during play.
"The Girls Scouts were precious and so excited to come out to the match. I'm glad we could be an inspiration to the girls," said redshirt freshman middle blocker Kaye-Alese Green. "It was amazing because the screams were so high pitched and everywhere. We loved it. It's always good to have a big fan base and to know you are a role model for the kids.
"It makes you feel like you are using athletics for more than just the sport. You are using it to influence kids for the better," Green added.
An autograph session followed the match where the many girls in attendance were able to have special schedule posters autographed by the entire team.
Aside from taking in the thrilling match, the troops had the opportunity to watch the football team defeat Marshall, 16-6. Because of the heavy downpours, the game was simulcast inside The Venue on a projector for all who wanted to stay dry.
Following the Knights' seventh-straight win over Marshall, about 50 Girl Scouts and 10 leaders spent the night inside The Venue They used the court for sleeping quarters, board games and crafts area, and a movie theater.
With the entire outing by the Girls Scouts of Citrus Council deemed a huge success, expect to see more troops making their way out to the UCF campus to support the Knights.
