ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the third season in a row and as many times in program history. The Knights were recognized with the honor for posting a 3.340 team GPA during the 2011-12 school year.
UCF was one of 102 NCAA Division I women's volleyball teams to be honored by the AVCA for excellence in the classroom and were also one of just five Conference USA squads to earn the accolade.
"This has become an annual tradition for our program to earn this award," head coach Todd Dagenais said. "Although our first priority continues to be championships on the volleyball court, this demonstrates that our philosophy of excellence in the classroom continues to be a significant part of our program's identity."
While the 2011-12 squad excelled as a whole, a few members of the team truly ramped up their efforts in the classroom. Graduated senior Rachel Vukson ended her UCF career with a perfect 4.0 GPA this past spring and was joined by senior Tory McCutcheon who made all A's as a molecular biology and microbiology major. McCutcheon, a middle blocker, was also named to the C-USA All-Academic Team and was a Capital One Academic All-District selection this past season.
Fellow seniors Evija Vilde and Dani Harrison also excelled as Vilde notched a 3.7 and 3.8 during the fall and spring semesters while Harrison registered back-to-back GPAs better than 3.7 in her junior year.
While the Knights have continually shined in the classroom, their play on the court has also improved as well. After its best season in eight years that saw it reach the 20-win plateau in 2011, UCF will hit the court looking for its first postseason berth since 2003 when it opens the season at the USF Invitational on Aug. 24.
