ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Helping the UCF women's tennis team jump out to its best start since 2009-10, senior Genevieve Lorbergs (Victoria, Australia) earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday. The Knights currently boast a 5-1 record thanks to a pair of 5-2 home victories over Troy and Furman last week.
"Genevieve is totally deserving of this recognition," head coach Stephanie Nickitas said. "She has worked very hard and has made some tremendous changes to her game which are paying off in both singles and doubles. I'm really proud of the way she is playing and leading this team."
Opening the week against Troy Feb. 8, Lorbergs partnered with Josephine Haraldson at No. 1 doubles for an 8-6 win against Karoline Grymel and Lyubova Dorofeeva. Moments later, Lorbergs battled back from a set down to edge Grymel at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Without having a lot of time to recover, Lorbergs clashed with Furman Feb. 9 and with the help of Haraldson, immediately took down the doubles pair of Lauren Kline and Alex Moreno-Kaste, 8-3. However singles would prove to be a difficult challenge for Lorbergs as Kline ranked No. 68 in the country. In a meeting in January, Lorbergs barely got by Kline in the UCF Invitational, 7-6, 7-5, and on Feb. 9 Kline took the first set, 7-5. Lorbergs rallied back, though, and seized momentum for the rest of the match in her 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 win.
Lorbergs, who won her first C-USA weekly award of her career, claims an 11-9 singles record in 2012-13, and is 5-1 in dual-match play at the No. 1 position. Meanwhile, Lorbergs and Haraldson have won seven-straight matches as a doubles duo, including triumphs over Florida and Florida State. They own an overall record of 13-5 with a 6-0 mark at the No. 1 spot.
UCF hits the road this weekend when it travels to Tallahassee to take on Florida State Friday at 3 p.m. and Georgia State Saturday at noon.
