TAMPA, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Opening up its final tournament of the fall, the UCF women's tennis team completed day one of the Florida State Championships Friday in Tampa. A total of four Knights advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in singles play, while two doubles teams reached the quarterfinal round.

Seeded third in the event, the doubles duo of Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson had a bye in the first round before topping Bethany Holt and Symone Townsend from Florida A&M, 8-4. Also earning a first-round bye, Jenna Doerfler and Clare Mendell shutout FAMU's Elysia Ortiz and Stephanie Miller, 8-0.

Four Knights took advantage of byes in singles play to deliver second-round victories Friday. Going three sets, Courtney Griffith split the first two sets with Florida Gulf Coast's Johanna Sterkel until claiming the third set super-tiebreaker, 10-6. In straight sets, Doerfler took care of business in a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over North Florida's Melanie Aguirre, Lorbergs gave up just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win vs. Ortiz and Haraldson posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory against North Florida's Taylor Hollander.

Day two of the three-day Florida State Championships gets underway Saturday in Tampa.
