ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Part one of UCFAthletics.com's season preview with head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie of the 2013 UCF softball season focuses on the pitchers and catchers.
“Mackenzie (Audas) has so much confidence as our top pitcher. She dominated some really strong teams last year like Florida and she just knows how to battle and win games,” Luers-Gillispie said. “Shelby is very versatile and is a real competitor. She watched Mackenzie a lot last year and not only wants to be as good in the circle, but she wants to hit and play the outfield as well. Alex has the experience as a senior and she’s going to use that expertise to earn some starts. With Mackenzie (Huhn) and Lauren, we’re going to use this season to get them to understand what they need to do and where they need to be for next season.”
-So. Mackenzie Audas – The reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Year. She shattered UCF freshman records with 21 wins, 279 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA in 2012.
-Fr. Shelby Turnier – A two-time state-title winner out of Palm Beach Gardens. She earned the prestigious Florida Miss Softball as a high-school senior.
-Sr. Alex Hartshorn – A senior leader in the dugout. She recorded five wins in 11 appearances in 2012.
-Fr. Lauren Dannelley – Right-handed pitcher out of Sweeny, Texas, will provide depth in the rotation and bullpen.
“We moved Hayley behind the plate at the beginning of last season and she really flourished,” Luers-Gillispie said. “Her arm is so strong not many teams tried to run on her last season. Behind Hayley we’ve got three freshmen that are competing against each other every day. Sam, Kalyn and Jasmine are all making great strides behind the plate. We could see all three of them in the lineup at various spots this season because of their versatility.”
-So. Hayley Barrow – A C-USA All-Freshman Team honoree made 34 starts a year ago and will be the primary catcher. She will also see time at third base.
-Fr. Samantha McCloskey – A high school power hitter has also worked at both corner infield spots. She is looking to hit her way into a regular role possibly at designated player.
-Fr. Kalyn Cenal – Another versatile bat that showed strong plate discipline and on-base ability in fall ball. Will also be in the mix to start at first base.
-Fr. Jasmine Acevedo – A high school outfielder that has transitioned to the catcher spot.
