ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF women's soccer forward Nicolette Radovcic was chosen in the second round of the inaugural National Women's Soccer League Draft on Friday morning. The Rockaway, N.J., native was selected as the 16th-overall pick by the Portland Thorns FC.
"I am extremely grateful and truly honored," Radovcic said. "It's such an amazing feeling. I thank all the people in my life that have gotten me to this point, especially my teammates, coach (Amanda Cromwell), Donna (Fishter) and Josh (Walters)."
Radovcic was one of seven athletes from Florida programs to be selected in the 32-player, four-round draft. She heard the news via text message from UCF assistant coach Joshua S. Walters, Sr., and ran to her computer to update the NWSL's Twitter feed, which was giving pick-by-pick updates.
Radovcic wrapped up her career as the Knights' leading goal scorer for the past two seasons. During her tenure, she was chosen as an NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team selection, All-Conference USA First Team honoree and the 2012 C-USA Tournament Offensive MVP.
UCF had some of its most successful seasons with Radovcic in uniform. In 2011, she started in 23 games while helping the team earn its first berth to the Elite Eight since 1987. In 2012, she captained the team to its highest national ranking in two decades, helped deliver its first C-USA tournament title and boasted a team-leading five game-winning goals, which ranked 17th nationally and tied for fifth on UCF's single-season leaders list.
"I thank every day that I chose to come to UCF," Radovcic said. "I don't think I would have had such an amazing experience anywhere else. It has helped me grow as a person and become more confident in myself and as a soccer player. I just learned so much from being here."
The NWSL is an eight-team league that will kick off its inaugural season in April 2013 with each team playing 22 games, including 11 home games.
The Portland Thorns are coached by Cindy Parlow Cone, one of the all-time leading scorers for the U.S. Women's National Team and a FIFA Women's World Cup champion. Radovcic's new teammates include 2012 Olympic gold medalists Alex Morgan, Rachel Buehler and Tobin Heath and 2012 Olympic bronze medalists Karina LeBlanc and Christine Sinclair.
