ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After helping the UCF men's soccer team to a pair of key road victories, goalkeeper Sebastian Evers and forward Omar Vallejo each received a weekly individual honor Monday. Evers was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, while Vallejo earned a spot on the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week.
Both players were instrumental in UCF's 1-0 road wins at Kentucky and Marshall last week. The victory at Marshall in the team's regular-season finale secured the Knights a spot in the C-USA Championship, which begins Wednesday in Hoover, Ala.
A redshirt sophomore, Evers posted two shutouts. He tallied 13 saves in the pair of victories. Evers had an incredible performance in the win at Kentucky. He stopped nine shots, including six in the second half when the Wildcats peppered the Knights with 14 total shots. With a spot in the league championship on the line at Marshall, Evers had four saves. The Miami native has six shutouts on the year and recorded four against C-USA opponents during the regular season.
Vallejo tallied the game-winning goal against Kentucky and then assisted on the game-winning score at Marshall. At Kentucky, he recorded the game's lone goal in the 40th minute on a free kick. The score was his third of the season and third in as many matches.
Against Marshall, with no points on the board for either team, Vallejo sent a free kick into the box with 10 seconds remaining in regulation. After a deflection, Eduardo Jimenez scored with only three seconds left to give the Knights an incredible 1-0 victory. The assist for Vallejo was his eighth of the year.
The Knights will face tournament host and No. 6 seed UAB Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern in the C-USA Championship quarterfinals. The winner will face No. 2 seed Tulsa in the semifinals Friday evening.
