ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - As part of a defense that held SMU to just 133 passing yards and only 259 total yards in a 42-17 UCF win Nov. 3, senior defensive end Troy Davis was selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks the first C-USA weekly award of Davis' career.
So far this year, UCF has had five C-USA weekly honors:
2012 UCF C-USA Players of the Week
KR Quincy McDuffie - Special Teams - Oct. 8
RB Latavius Murray - Offensive - Oct. 22
CB A.J. Bouye - Defensive - Oct. 22
KR Quincy McDuffie - Special Teams - Oct. 29
DE Troy Davis - Defensive - Nov. 5
A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Davis also received C-USA Defensive Player of the Week accolades from College Sports Madness, while he joined senior running back Latavius Murray (23-155-2 TD, 3 total TD) by earning national honorable mention status by the College Football Performance Awards.
SMU entered the game by averaging 267.2 passing yards, only to finish with less than half that in the loss to the Knights. Davis proved to play a big role in that defensive effort, coming through with two sacks and a forced fumble. He also recorded five tackles overall and a quarterback hurry. His two sacks went for a combined loss of eight yards, and they both occurred on the first drive of the game, forcing SMU to punt. That gave momentum to the offense, which found the endzone on its first drive and never looked back.
The Mustangs' star running back, Zach Line, was held to under his season averages as he finished with 96 yards and a 4.6 average per carry.
For 2012, Davis has a personal-best 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 9.0 tackles for loss. He also has 17 career sacks, which is 1.5 sacks shy of entering UCF's top 10. Dating back to 2011, he has 11.5 sacks in the last 14 games.
Davis and the Knights (7-2, 5-0) concluded their first practice of the week Monday as they continue their preparations for a trip to UTEP Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on FOX College Sports.
