2002: Gaines saw action in all 12 games, starting three... he finished the year with 11 catches for 191 yards and two touchdowns... he averaged 17.4 yards per reception... he had his best game of the season against Miami (Ohio), catching two passes for 51 yards... his touchdowns came against Toledo and Buffalo... he returned four kicks for 38 yards on special teams... he was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the 2004 NFL draft in the 7th round.
2001: Gaines played in all 11 games, recording one start... he wound up with 11 receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown... he averaged 10.5 yards per catch and his longest was 24 yards... he also returned one kick for 13 yards... he caught at least one pass in seven games... his touchdown came in a great catch in traffic in the end zone against Virginia Tech.
2000: Gaines enrolled at UCF in January, but was not eligible to participate with the team in the fall and subsequently lost a year of eligibility.
Prior to UCF: Gaines signed with Alabama in 1999, but did not meet initial eligibility requirements and did not enroll.
High School: Gaines graduated from Tallahassee's Florida High School in 1999, where he played for coach Mike Hickman... he was a versatile athlete, playing as many as six different positions (tight end, linebacker, kicker, backup quarterback, and offensive tackle)... he had 20 receptions for 535 yards and nine touchdowns and had 110 tackles during his senior season... he was a National Recruiting Advisor top 100 recruit and was rated the No. 1 tight end in Florida... he earned first team All-Big Bend and all-state honors as a junior and senior and was named to the Florida Super 24 team as a senior... he was a preseason high school All-American and was the first from Florida High to play in the Florida-Georgia High School All-Star game... he finished his career with 56 receptions for 1,715 yards and 20 touchdowns... he also lettered in basketball all four years.
Personal: Gaines is a liberal studies major... he was born March 30, 1980, in Tallahassee, and is the son of Willie and Barbara Gaines.
