HOUSTON, Texas (UCFathletics.com) - Freshman Jamie Perzanowski emerged from the Conference USA Cross Country Championships with all-conference honors on Monday morning by pacing the Knights with their best individual finish in five years. UCF placed 10th as a team while SMU won the 5K race for its third championship in four years.
Perzanowski clocked 18:01.7 for 20th place to earn third-team all conference accolades, marking UCF's highest finish by an individual since freshman Jenny Clausen placed 12th in 2006.
"Jamie pressed hard from start to end and I commend her. She worked hard this season and an all-conference finish as a freshman is outstanding," UCF Head Coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. "I had expected that we'd finish a little higher but I will say that I'm proud of everyone who ran a personal best today and we'll go home and get started for NCAA Regionals."
The remaining four runners of the Knights' top five finishers each posted personal best times.
Freshman Teresa Huff was the Knights' next top finisher with a time of 19:14.7 for 53rd place. Sophomore Erica Winston crossed the finish line next with a time of 19:29, freshman Cody Castillo finished in 19:45.5 and freshman Amelia Williams rounded out the group with a time of 19:53.2.
Sophomore Jessica Pachay also recorded a personal best time of 20:04.4 while sophomores Danielle Scaffidi and Ne'Ausha Logan produced season-best times of 20:12.4 and 20:20, respectively.
"The team ran progressively better throughout the season," distance coach Paul Brown said. "I think we made a big step forward this year and the future looks really bright. Considering we did better with all freshmen and sophomores, I like the direction we are headed."
UCF will compete in the NCAA South Region Championships on Nov. 12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at 5 p.m.
