Joe Simon began his tenure with UCF Athletics in 2005. Simon was promoted to associate athletics director for internal operations in July of 2011. Simon is in charge of the day-to-day supervision of the facilities, sports turf and grounds, and event operations departments. His unit is also responsible for supervising the daily housekeeping, maintenance, scheduling, and rental of all athletic facilities. In his current role Simon serves as the Athletic Department contact with various UCF departments which include the Police Department, Physical Plant, Facilities Planning, Parking, and Environmental Health and Safety.
Simon and his staff supervise all aspects of event operations for all regular season, conference, and NCAA championship events. Past events include hosting numerous Conference USA Championships and NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer matches in 2010 and 2011. Simon serves as the overall game administrator for football game operations.
Simon's responsibilities also include providing oversight of construction and occupancy of all renovations and capital construction projects. While at UCF, Simon has been involved in the management of 8 capital construction projects worth a combined $148 million the past six years which has benefitted 16 sports programs. Simon supervised the day-to-day construction and occupancy of the 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Football Stadium which opened in 2007. Simon also served as the athletic department representative for the construction of the 10,000 seat UCF Arena which also opened in 2007. After the completion of the new arena Simon shifted his focus to the management of the renovation of the original UCF Arena into a practice facility for men's basketball and women's basketball and a 1500 seat competition venue for Volleyball which opened in 2008. In addition to teams listed above the UCF Softball, Rowing, Men's and Women's golf, Men's and Women's Soccer, and Women's track teams have all benefited from brand new or renovated facilities within the past 6 years.
In addition to his duties at UCF, Simon is a lead trainer with the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security. Simon has lead workshops on stadium security for NCAA Division I, II and III colleges and universities across the country in fulfillment of a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
Prior to his arrival at UCF, Simon spent the previous four and a half years at UNC-Wilmington serving as the assistant athletic director of facilities and event operations before being promoted to the associate athletic director of internal operations. While at UNC-Wilmington, Simon managed all capital construction projects and supervised the departments of athletic facilities, event management, grounds, and sports medicine. Simon also served as the sport administrator for Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Cross Country, and Men's and Women's Track and Field programs.
Prior to his time at UNC-Wilmington, Simon was the travel coordinator and assistant ticket manager at Brown University. While at Brown, Simon assisted with the management of the athletic ticket office, worked directly with coaches to coordinate all aspects of team travel for each of Brown's 37 varsity sports, monitored travel budgets and oversaw the reconciliation of all bills pertaining to team travel.
In his first stint at UNC-Wilmington, Simon served as the ticket manager/database administrator where he prepared all fundraising reports and served as a contact for a volunteer network of 50 plus individuals that raised funds for the UNCW Seahawk Club's annual campaign. Simon also coordinated all aspects of the department's first seat selection event based on priority points for men's basketball season tickets.
Simon holds a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in history and a master's from the University of Tennessee in sports administration. Simon and his wife Amy have a son Dean and a daughter Mallory.
