CBSSports.com recently ranked the top-25 impact transfers in
the country and for UCF fans, there was one notable admission. Calvin Newell,
the dynamic junior guard who began his career at Oklahoma, was not on the list.
Going under the radar is not too much of a bad thing for Newell,
who will become eligible after the conclusion of the first semester. Opposing
teams will learn about Newell soon enough.
The Philadelphia native has shown off his offensive ability
each day during UCF's preseason practices. Newell can score in a variety of
ways and displayed that Thursday during an intrasquad scrimmage inside the UCF
Arena. He drained 3-pointers, knocked down jump shots, drove to the basket and
sneaked away for easy layups on fastbreaks.
Newell could become even more dangerous during games when he
is paired with a skilled post player in Keith Clanton, a powerful wing in
Isaiah Sykes and an improving long-distance shooter in Tristan Spurlock.
I have little doubt that if the ranking of impact transfers
is updated at the end of the season, Newell will make his way onto the list.
And as a result, UCF fans should not be worried that the guard is going under
the radar prior to the start of the campaign.
